Stitch & row gauge

Use a measured swatch to estimate stitches and rows for a target rectangle.

Use a single decimal point or comma, without thousands separators or unit symbols. All lengths use the selected unit. Values must be 0–1,000,000; dimensions and swatch counts must exceed zero. Counts must be whole numbers. Extra allowance: 0–100%; lengthwise shrinkage: 0–50%.

Assumptions & limits

Measure a representative washed or blocked swatch in the project’s stitch pattern. Counts round up to whole stitches and rows. Pattern repeats, edge stitches, shaping and changes in tension are not included.

Formula

stitches = ceil(S / sw × tw); rows = ceil(R / sh × th)

S
Stitches counted
R
Rows
sw
Measured swatch width
sh
Measured swatch height
tw
Target width
th
Target height

Worked example

S = 20; R = 28; sw = sh = 10 cm; tw = 50 cm; th = 60 cm → 100; 168.

Results show up to 8 decimal places. Small values use scientific notation; calculations use unrounded factors.
