Quilting & crafts

Patchwork square planner

Count equal finished squares to meet or exceed a rectangular quilt size and find their cutting size.

Use a single decimal point or comma, without thousands separators or unit symbols. All lengths use the selected unit. Values must be 0–1,000,000; dimensions and swatch counts must exceed zero. Counts must be whole numbers. Extra allowance: 0–100%; lengthwise shrinkage: 0–50%.

Assumptions & limits

A straight grid with no sashing or borders is assumed. Counts round up, so the finished grid may exceed the target. Add the entered allowance to each edge of a square. This does not calculate backing, batting or total fabric purchasing.

Formula

across = ceil(w / S); down = ceil(l / S); squares = across × down; cutSide = S + 2s

w
Quilt width
l
Quilt length
S
Finished square side
s
Allowance on each edge

Worked example

w = 60 in; l = 80 in; S = 5 in; s = 0.25 in → 12 × 16 = 192; 5.5 in.

Results show up to 8 decimal places. Small values use scientific notation; calculations use unrounded factors.
